Why Lung Cancer Screening Matters
Many people with early-stage lung cancer have no symptoms, which is why screening is essential.
- Low-Dose CT (LDCT) scans are the preferred screening tool. These scans use a much lower radiation dose than standard CT scans and are safe for annual use.
- The National Lung Cancer Screening Trial showed that yearly LDCT scans reduced deaths from lung cancer by about 20% compared with traditional chest X-rays — because more cancers were caught at an early, treatable stage.
Screening doesn’t prevent cancer — but it can detect it early before symptoms develop, when treatment is most effective.
Who Should Consider Lung Cancer Screening
You may be a candidate for lung cancer screening if you are at high risk, including:
- Current or former smokers
- Adults meeting national screening guidelines (typically based on age and smoking history)

Understanding Lung Nodules
A lung nodule is a small spot on the lung seen on imaging that measures 30 mm or less. Nodules are common — and most (about 95 %) are not cancer. Accurate evaluation is critical to:
- Avoid unnecessary procedures
- Ensure early detection of cancers when they are present

What Screening Results Mean
Negative screen: No nodules are found — continue routine annual screening.
Positive screen: A nodule is found — and may warrant follow-up imaging or diagnostic testing, such as:
- Further CT scans
